Kids Run The OC 2013

Every year my son’s school participates in “Kids Run The OC”. Kids Run The OC is a 10-12 week program that promotes an active and healthy lifestyle to kids to help prevent the onset of child obesity. During the 10-12 weeks, the kids have practice before, during or after school, where they accumulate a total of 25.2 miles of exercise through FUN, play activities!

This was the first time that my son participated because in the years before that he had sports commitments. They had practices after school two days a week which was perfect for him, because he always has a ton of energy after school.

Kids Run The OC Practice

My son was pretty much wiped from being at school all day and then having run club.  In my book, that is a total win. Because seriously, the kid has so much energy. And I always know that he is working hard when he’s tired.

My son also loves Nuun just as much as me. He chugged a full bottle at the end of practice each day.

Kids Run The OC 2013

At the beginning of May, it came time to race! The kids would be grouped by age, and they would complete a mile. My son had trained for this for several weeks. It wasn’t his first race so he knew what to expect.

Kids Run The OC

I love all of the bright colors at the starting line. It looks nice and quiet, doesn’t it? But if you only knew how much chatter was going on. To the left of the starting line were hundreds of kids, waiting, and ready to run!

Kids Run The OC 2013

Well the kid ran as fast as he could, in the chaos. Seriously, he told me that it was very crowded and he was afraid of getting trampled on. He got trampled at a race once, and I think that he is a bit paranoid about that now.

Kids Run The OC 2013

Here is a close-up photo of his medal for running the race. I think that they did a fantastic job with the kid’s race medals.

Kids Run The OC 2013

And the best part? A few weeks after the race, they had an awards assembly before school one day. My son was given a marathon medal for participating in “Kids Run The OC”. As part of the program, you train for 25.2 miles, and then run the race which is an additional mile. Well 26.2 miles in total is a full marathon! So basically my son has a marathon medal and I still don’t have one!  He was pretty stoked to get another medal to add to his rack.

I think that this is a fantastic program for kids, and my son will be participating again this year! So if you have kids in Orange County, you should check out the race, and see if your kid’s school is participating in the training program!

What a month! Is it January yet?

What a month! It has been so crazy and hectic, that I haven’t had time to blog. Seriously with work, my son’s hockey games/practices/etc. and attempting to run, I barely have any free time. Has everyone else been just as busy, or is it just me?

Photo Booth Fun with @BlahBlahBlahger

This is visual proof of my crazy life!

I’ve been doing a bootcamp with my friends on Monday nights, and JJ’s Annual Holiday Party just happened to be on a Monday night. I texted JJ that I would be coming to her party in workout attire because I had “worked all day, was going to bootcamp, and I did not have time to stop at home and change.” I entertained everyone that night with my “holiday themed” workout attire. You can’t see my awesome compression socks in this photo, but they really made the outfit.

I got to spend some time rehashing the past umm two years with Ashley and her husband, Jeff. I can’t figure out whom is more entertaining, me or them? They pretty much know everything that is going on in my life, from my Instagram account. And I think Ashley wants a clone of my son, because my stories and photos of him always make her smile.

Wait, did I mention that JJ had a photo booth set-up on her tiny condominium deck for the party? YES! It was awesome! I wish I would have taken more photos. But at least I captured one with the hostess!

So I will end with this right now…more to come…

Running, Hockey, Christmas, and much much more!

Santa Monica-Venice Christmas Run Race Recap

I usually sign up to run races in advance, most races it is 6+ months in advance. This was the case with the Santa Monica-Venice Christmas Run. I signed myself and my son up in July, which was cost effective, but not very smart.

When it got closer to the event, I realized that I needed someone to watch my son while I ran the 5K. Everyone was either out of town, or had plans the day of the race. Luckily, I remembered that one of our friends is an early riser, and asked him to come along. The week before the race, umm last week, I saw that the weather predictions for race day were grim. As in 70% chance of rain, the morning of the race, eeeeek!

I got home late the night before the race because we attended a Christmas Party. I pulled some things from my closet, and left them in a pile on the floor, and went to bed. I usually plan my race outfits out in advance, but I’ve been swamped lately. I woke up at 6am on race day, got dressed, got the kid out of bed, and headed on my way to get Jayson (kid sitter).

Totally doubtful...what the hell am I doing...running the @christmasrun from Santa Monica to Venice today. Cray cray! #christmasrun #freezing

After getting our race bibs, almost losing my son’s race bib, and stripping off my extra clothing, I waited to run. I hid under a tree with several other people for about 30 minutes while it began to pour rain. This was my “what the hell was I thinking” face. Ironically, I wasn’t that cold. My hair was making me cold only because it was getting wet.

A little Sparkle Athletic, Pro Compression, and some Brooks Running PureFlow 2 helped me survive a rainy race day.

I caved and bought the super cute Pro Compression Marathon Holiday socks and wore them with my Sparkle Athletic skirt and Brooks PureFlow 2’s. The compression socks kept my legs really warm. I was sooo happy that I wore them. Seriously, I’ve never worn compression socks when racing, but they were perfect for a cold and rainy race day.

And then the race started…..

The rain had slowed down, and it was a bit drizzly. For the first 1/4 mile, I powered through. After a bit, we made a turn and it got narrowed. It was starting to rain more intensely, and people started walking. I attempted to run around the slower people and kept my pace up. After about mile 1, the rain was coming down fast and the wind had picked up. I had my hair in pigtails, and my wet hair kept hitting me in the face. My hands were super cold and I had them clenched in fists.

A little before mile 2, we started running on the Venice boardwalk. It was a little more difficult to run on the sidewalk, because there was wet sand on the ground, and areas were starting to puddle up. I would end hopping around to avoid stepping in a huge puddle.

Santa Monica-Venice Christmas Run 2013

But I powered through and finished. Seriously, I was freezing. And ummm, I PR’ed!!! I ran 30 seconds faster than my previous PR from a few months ago! Yippee! This pic was taken post-race. You can’t tell but I was soaking wet and shivering right here. It was also raining still. But it wasn’t time to leave yet…because my son still had the kids race. Oh, and this was a 5K (3.1 miles) race. I wasn’t that crazy to run a 1/2 marathon in the rain.

Not only did I run in the monsoon rain in Santa Monica today, but this kid ran the kid's race. #christmasrun

Notice how happy he looks? That is because it is raining outside, and he is under a covered tent. We waited until the kid’s race was about to start before leaving the covered area.

Santa Monica-Venice Christmas Run-Kid's Run 2013

And then they were off…

My son is wearing the gray beanie, the 3rd kid from the left. He went out running fast. I ran around to the finish area waiting for him. And then I spotted him a few minutes later….

Santa Monica-Venice Christmas Run-Kid's Run 2013

You are probably imagining what I was saying to him. “Walking, why are you walking?” It was raining, and he probably had less than two minutes left to run.

Santa Monica-Venice Christmas Run-Kid's Run 2013

More motivational conversations while running with him. They went something like this, “I think I saw a 3 year old pass you? Maybe you should run a bit faster, so you can be done soon?”

Santa Monica-Venice Christmas Run-Kid's Run 2013

Yay, we are running! Let’s go!

Chasing after my son at the Santa Monica-Venice Christmas Run on Saturday. It was raining and he wasn't "moving" fast enough. Husband says "You look like an angry duck chasing him down." I was wet and cold, I wanted to go home asap! #christmasrun #teamspa

Almost finished! I sent this photo to my husband and he said that I “look like an angry duck chasing him down”…. Gee thanks husband. I was motivating him to finish! And he continued on and ran through the finish! Yippee!

And then we headed towards the car, which was probably a mile away. I parked FAR! I’m an idiot! And I was cold, and pretty much shivering!

I immediately grabbed my sweatshirt when I got to the car, and blasted the heat. I don’t think that we made it home until noon-ish. I immediately jumped in the shower when I got home to get warm. I turned on the heater in the house and bundled up. It took several hours to finally feel normal. My shoes were soaking wet, and they are still sitting in the garage, drying out.

We have no post-race photographs of the kid and I, because we pretty much hustled to the car. I had a blast, even though it was raining. I’m not sure if I would run in rain like that again. I had somewhat of a cold last week, and I think being in all that rain made it worse. I’ve struggled with sinus and cold issues all day.

It was a well organized race, fun, scenic, and you received a long sleeve tech tee with a cute design. My son even got a long sleeve shirt also. I would totally do this race again, and I will sign-up again next year!

Are you running any Holiday-Themed Races?

Thanksgiving Weekend, or ummm week

I’ve been rather busy these days, with things like work, kid, running, hockey, laundry, sleeping….rinse and repeat. Seriously!

My son was off of school the entire week of Thanksgiving. It is very hard when both parents work full-time to drop everything for an entire week. But we managed. My parents had the kid a few days, my husband entertained on his days off, and I filled in the voids.

I was scheduled to work on Thanksgiving Day along with my husband, my mom, and several of our friends. We had our big “turkey meal” on Wednesday, the day before. I actually worked during the day on Wednesday, so my husband made the feast while I was working. Yay husband! Now I’m hungry again. I want leftovers! Oh wait, we had such a large group, we didn’t have any.

Thanksgiving Wednesday. Since everyone has to work on actual Thanksgiving. #foodcoma

On Thanksgiving Day, I worked again…and also feasted again. That is, had a delicious breakfast. Cinnamon Roll French Toast. Need I say more?

If you have to work on a holiday, you might as well go out to breakfast! Until chaos happens and your co-worker tosses her credit card at you and runs out of the restaurant.

After doing a child swamp with the husband after I got off work, I chilled out at home with the kid on Thanksgiving. Then I went out shopping at midnight, totally not planned. My parents wanted to get the kid an XBox One….so apparently, I had to go out and find one for them to gift to the kid. Yay me! But got one! And then I was all warm and comfy in my bed, soon after that acquisition.

ElfOnTheShelf

My BFF likes to scare me! I was a bit traumatized by her first #elfontheshelf post of the Holiday Season. I’ve done the “Elf On The Shelf” thing for the past few years. But it is a huge commitment. I almost forgot to move the Elf several times. I might do it later in the season because wow, I can’t keep it up for 30 days, insane!

Gamer Kid

While I slept in a little, and played on my phone…I guess my kid woke up, and kept himself entertained. He was eating saltine crackers for breakfast. At least he is self sufficient. Yay!

The first of two goals in a row for @anaheimducks today! With @puckfarmer @herbashark and my kid today! #anaheimducks #nhl #hockey

On Friday afternoon, I took my son to his first NHL Hockey Game, The Anaheim Ducks vs. The Calgary Flames. It was fun watching the game as my son actually knew something about the sport. He kept asking questions, but mostly he liked watching all the fights. I think seeing the fights against the boards is his favorite part of hockey.

Took the kid to @daisojapanca to get origami paper tonight. He is getting incredibly frustrated and has turned to YouTube video tutorials.

My son kept talking about making origami projects and he wanted origami paper over the weekend. Luckily, we live in the perfect area, because there is a Diaso Japan store locally. He had quite the selection of origami paper to chose from, plus it is cheap.

The rest of the weekend was spent relaxing, running (for me), and my husband and I attended a 25th wedding anniversary party. Then it was back to the grind, of work and school. Luckily, my son only has 3 weeks till Christmas Break, and that means I need to get my Christmas shopping done asap! Oh, and do some sort of Holiday card. Yikes, talk about last minute panic!

Wordless Wednesday: Deliciousness at Bruxie Waffles

The new Bruxie Waffles opened up in Costa Mesa yesterday. I had to get some of the deliciousness the first day, obviously. This little bite of heaven was Nutella, bananas, and sweet cream, all wrapped up in a waffle sandwich. I might have shared with a co-worker though.

Caution: Awesome food alert! Had to check out the new @bruxiewaffles in Costa Mesa today! Had the Nutella and bananas with sweet cream. It was my first time trying Nutella. Delicious! Go now! #bruxie #food #costamesa

The Ghosts of Halloween Past at Disneyland

Last month we headed to Disneyland for Mickey’s Halloween Party and HalloweenTime. We have been attending HalloweenTime events at Disneyland Resort since 2006, when my son was almost 18 months old. It has become somewhat of a tradition for us.

We had a blast, and going to Disneyland anytime during HalloweenTime always starts off the Fall season with a bang! I love to see all of the costumes that everyone is wearing whether they are store bought or homemade. And the adults costumes are always super fabulous!

Although today is Halloween, and the last day of HalloweenTime at Disneyland, it is time to start thinking about next year. Maybe it will be the perfect time to plan a Disneyland trip with your family? Seriously, the weather is perfect, and the decorations are fantastic!

And oh my goodness, my son has really grown up since he wore that adorable pirate costume!

Disclosure: I was invited to Mickey’s Halloween Party along with my family. We were given free tickets to enjoy the night. I was not paid (compensated) with cash. All opinions and photographs are mine.

Spooky Science and The Science of Ripley’s Believe It Or Not {Discovery Science Center}

My 8-year old son is a huge science nut. Math and science are his favorite subjects. When I told him that we were going to Discovery Science Center a couple of weeks ago, he screamed with excitement.
