Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination

Last month we headed to The Discovery Science Center for The Science of Gingerbread event but we were also very excited about their current exhibit: Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination, which continues though April 15th 2012.

As my husband and son are HUGE fanboys, they could not wait to check out this exhibit. When we entered the museum, we were immediately greeted by these guys. My husband was totally impressed. The kid, well he was a bit frightened and REFUSED the photo opportunity, total FAIL.

The Star Wars exhibit is in a separate area in the museum and is behind a closed door. The anticipation was so great and you did not know what to expect. Well, ‘Hello There Landspeeder”, upon entering the exhibit, I immediately noticed the Landspeeder. In the “Getting Around” theme area, Luke Skywalker’s Landspeeder from Episode IV is on exhibit.

Angry Kid was mesmerized with building a spaceport, moisture farm community and walled Jawa town. You place cards on a table, the physical landscape, and a computer superimposes a building on a site in virtual reality and real time.

In the Robots and People section of the exhibit, Angry Kid got to see robots like C-3PO and R2-D2.  But this OOM-series battle droid excited him because it was a larger version of the one that was on Day 11 of his Lego Star Wars Advent Calendar. I’m pretty sure that he was making a robot face. My kid is odd sometimes, well not really, he’s just a typical 6-year old boy.

Costumes from each of the Star Wars worlds { TATOOINE, KASHYYYK, CORUSCANT, HOTH} will demonstrate how the environment shaped the look of the Star Wars characters.  I love this photo of Yoda and Anakin from Coruscant.  A little trivia and randomness but Angry Kid was born the day that Episode III: Revenge of the Sith came out. Angry Husband attempted to get me to change or incorporate the name “Anakin” into Angry Kid’s name. No, I’m not joking. And yes, while I was in the hospital recovering from a c-section, a certain husband was watching a movie.

Angry Husband also got to experience a virtual jump to lightspeed in a full-size replica of the cockpit of Star Wars Episode IV’s Millennium FalconI mean really, when do you get the change to ride in a Millenium Falcon? Never!
