My first job

My family likes to taunt me every time they visit this fast food restaurant.  They ask if I want anything, but they know my answer.  My first job was at Panda Express when I was fourteen years old.  I had a work permit.  I think I worked like ten hours a week, but it seemed forever.  I was a cashier.

Panda Express

My mom got me the job through one of her contacts.  I’m not sure if I was even looking for a job. Did I have a choice?

I was not destined to work in food service.  I think I only lasted a few months.  I remember how bad my uniform smelled every time I left work.  Just being in a Panda Express now makes me want to gag.

I’ve had several jobs since that first job; grocery bagger, clothing sales, school assistant, loss prevention, and even photo developer. I’ve been working ever since.  I have never been without a job since I was fourteen.

What was your first job? Did you have any unique jobs in high school or college?

I’m linking up with Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop and Weekly Writing Prompts.  And ironically, my family had Panda Express for dinner tonight, which made me totally laugh.  I already knew that I was going to write this post.  So I had Angry Husband snap the picture above.

My first job was when I was 18 at Mcdonald's and I hated it. Working as the grill person, fries person, cashier, dishwasher, cleaner all at the same time! but I have to admit that working at Mcdonald's honed me. It made me realized what life is and made me to believe and love myself more. When you experience awful things in life, it makes you stronger, it makes you want to prove to the whole world you are precious and therefore deserve better treatment, better situations in life. We need to treasure the experience of our first job because it made us the person we are today.

My first job was at Panda Express. LoL I got the job by connections through people I knew. I so totally agree with you about the awful smell left on the uniforms after a long day at work. I really like how they still come up with different dishes :)

My first real job was at Cinemapolis in Anaheim Hills. I gave 5 years of my life to that place and to this day, I find the smell and taste of popcorn revolting.

I was a record girl for a dance instructor who traveled to various Elk's clubs every night of the week. I would change out the records per his song list and watch the retired couples get dance lessons. I wouldn't get home until midnight which was tough. I also remember that the instructor would drink whiskey and soda all night long and he would even take one for the rode which he drank driving me home in his huge Cadillac. As I was on the drill team and had to get up for practice at 6am I did not last more than six months on that job.

oh, and my first job? I worked at a fancy theatre in downtown Denver taking tickets and showing Patrons where their seats were... I rarely smelled bad after work - but sometimes it's hard to shake off the old people smell.

we had Panda Express a few days ago... and as ALWAYS they left something out of my order!!! It was the cashier's fault I'm sure :)

I'm afraid if I worked at many of my favorite restaurants, I'd never want to eat there again. Although anything involving ice cream, chocolate or treats and I might just LOVE it! My husband loves Chinese food and could eat it everyday of the week. I like Italian food and he doesn't but since I'm the cook... hahaha... we eat lots of pasta:)

I was lucky that even though my high school job included food, I didn't really have to deal with it. I think any job where you're surrounded by food would make one gag after a while.

My first job was as a hand-stamper at the entrance gate of an amusement park. I started there when I was 14 and actually moved my way up rather quickly into upper management. I quit (at 21) when I finally realized that saying my "job" was at an amusement park was the equivalent of a 28 yr old dude saying he still lived at home in his parents basement. And loved it and never wanted to move out.

Love it. My first job was Taco Johns. Gross.

I babysat a lot and worked in a school uniform store. The owner didn't want the workers to sit and gossip so, we were told to bring books to read.

My first job was also when I was 14 (and, like you, I haven't stopped working since), working at Baskin Robbins. Yum! I would purposely make milkshakes too big so I could drink the leftovers. I loved that job! I think my favorite job was working at Glamour Shots from ages 17-19. I loved the people I worked with and had so much fun there. Dream job for a teenager who loved playing with make-up!

I am so glad I never had to work in fast food. Great list! I am cranky sometimes though. Visiting from Mama Kat's.

So...what really is in the orange chicken? Is it really chicken? I hope so because not gonna lie - it always calls to me when I'm in a mall food court. Nice post! Stopping by from Mamma Kat's :)

It's all about the connections! My mom hooked me up with almost every job I've got. Bless that woman. LOL

First job was in a deli at a local grocery store. I actually liked it until I started getting sexually harrassed by a manager there. I was only 17 ans he was 25. I told a woman manager what was happening and right after I left her office he went in there and told her "whatever she's saying she's lying, I never did anything to her." The female manager believed me, but they said since it was his word against mine the only thing they could do was make sure we worked different hours. They ended up cutting my hours down to 4 hours a week. I ended up quitting. That was my first work experience. :)

I've never been a fan of Panda Express... heard too many horror stories about the one at my old college campus that I couldn't ever go eat there. It was an experience though, right? And something you can write about now. : )

I've never worked at any fun first time jobs, just went straight to preschools, always wished I had done SOMETHING else .. But I was a spoiled rotten brat who didn't have to work til I was older , lol! Great post :)

I would never have been able to work in a fast food restaurant. The closest I ever got was a coffee shop. It is very funny that Panda Express was for dinner tonight considering what you were posting.

Love that story! Only had 3 jobs myself. First was during college and was seasonal. I did gift wrap for Neiman Marcus in The Fashion Show Mall on the Las Vegas Strip. Learned how to be a perfectionist at wrapping {they have very high standards to say the least}! Got a $100 dollar bill as a tip a few times, which was unheard of way back then! Crazy!

bahahah! My first job when I was 15 {I told them I was 16} was at SUBWAY!!! :) Love it.

Look at you, Ms. Fancy Theatre employee. I wish I was as lucky as you and had a normal first job.

Don't be blaming the cashier...you are probably one of those picky people that order weird stuff at Panda.

Angry Julie

Yea, I think almost all restaurant people feel that way. They get tired of eating the food. I'm not sure if I could work anywhere that sold ice cream, chocolate, or treats. That would be really bad. My husband eats Chinese only once in awhile. I think we eat more Mexican food than anything in our house.

Seriously, the food would make me gag....after a few hours.

That is like the best story EVER! I like the comparison of working at an amusement park vs. a guy living in his parent's basement. Because really, I can totally see that.

I love the option of reading books, rather than gossiping. At least you weren't made to clean or something like that.

Oh, I totally remember Glamour Shots. Those are totally jobs of the late 80's and early 90's.

Ya, don't tell the husband. I worked at the one in Fashion Island food court, which is now gone. Red Robin is where it used to be. Dance Troop but not the stripper kind, hmmmmmm

I don't even know what is in the orange chicken? It was like their secret sauce. They had the vat of it hidden in the back. Thanks for stopping by!

LOL, I'm laughing because my job, after Panda Express....was at a grocery store. I hated it, and all of the older employees were mean to me.

Yea, I do have a better appreciation of what goes into fast food. That is probably why I rarely eat it.

You are a spoiled rotten brat. Oh wait, so am I! I really didn't have to work either. I'm just nuts. I'm not sure why I kept taking jobs....

Yea, the coincidence of me writing about Panda Express, and husband getting that for dinner, was way freaky!

I worked loss prevention at Macy's for about nine months. I took all my Christmas gifts to the gif wrap department and had them all wrapped. They were so beautiful. Everyone needs to know that their trick is the double sided tape. And the really nice wrapping paper, plus some patience. A $100 tip, wow!

I love that your first job was at Subway. Classic!
