Makeup is not my forte

I’m a hot mess when it comes to makeup. Seriously, I think I’ve been using the same products and colors for at least five years. There is no variety in my makeup bag.  I go with the taupe and purple color groups.  I usually use bland taupe shadows paired with purples.  I sometimes add in a little silver or gray.  My blush container is cracking and falling apart.  It is embarrassing.

Angry Julie's Make-Up Bag

My makeup bag was a gift with purchase from Bath & Body Works.  I have some Bobbie Brown shadows, paired with random things.  I should call it the “blogger’s makeup bag”.  I think many of the items thrown in here were given to me, free at events.  Yes, my swag makeup.  Some of the colors don’t even match my skin tones or colors.  How sad is that?

I recently hit up the MAC Cosmetics counter at Nordstrom for a new lipstick.  I have lost all my lipsticks so I depend on Carmex and Burt’s Bees for my lips.  Both of those items are clear, as in, NO COLOR.  I told the salesgirl that I wanted to stay away from the bottom row of lipsticks.  She laughed at me.  Seriously, the entire bottom row was my usual color palette, also known as “the taupe lipstick group”.  I told her that I wanted something brighter.  I tried on about five colors and kept asking for something BRIGHTER.  I finally found a color that I like, “Party Line”.

I took a picture of it, but our bedroom is DARK, like really dark….so bear with me.

MAC Cosmetics Lipstick

It is great.  I love how long lasting it is too.  It is pretty dark, but if I blot it a little, it gets much lighter.  I can totally wear it in the daytime too.  Before I paid for my lipstick, the salesgirl asked me, “Is there anything else I can help you with?”  I laughed and said, “Umm that is going to take a few hours.  I will be back soon.  I need a complete makeup makeover.  I haven’t bought proper makeup or had my colors done for YEARS.”

Am I the only one with this problem?

Is there help for me?

Your blog made me laugh! If you could see my makeup bag, it would make yours look like some sort of models bag...I have broken eyeliners in an assortment of colors and brands, all of my make up cases are broken and the contents cracked or mostly used up! Lipstick? Ha! It's in my purse and I usually only wear it when I'm heading out for an interview or church! LOL! I so need a makeover! ULTA (if you have one in your area) or Sephora will do a makeover and you don't even have to commit to buying anything! I did it in NYC a year or so ago! It was great fun! I didn't buy anything then either!! Sigh...I am due!

I wish I could go get my colors done....or even afford anything but drugstore makeup. My skin texture has changed in the last 2 yrs. I use to use mineral makeup, but now find it makes me look worse & not better. had a thing to go to last week & needed new makeup badly so I went to CVS & got some things (Loreal, Revlon & I think Covergirl) ALL were FAILS! & I now remember why I liked makeup counters so much. I'm hoping CVS still lets you return makeup

Be careful getting your makeup done at the Mac counter, though... I've done it several times. And I can tell you that without being VERY specific about what you want, you will have a 50/50 chance of coming out of there looking like a back room dwelling, seedy club hopping, hooker. (... sadly I'm not exaggerating...)

Club hopping hooker!!! Yes, that is my destiny, but I totally know what you mean.

I haven't been to the MAC makeup counter in years. Tell me, did it feel like heaven? I'm so jealous!

It felt like heaven, but I hate spending money on stuff like that.

You are speaking the The Queen of crappy drug store makeup. I don't venture outside of what I started using over 10 years ago. Ehem. Yep, first makeup I could afford is the makeup I still use to this day. I don't sunbathe half (ninety) percent as much as I did when I first started wearing makeup so there's always a distinct difference between my chest and my face/neck. I know all the techniques, being friends with cosmetologists all my adult life, I just, uh, fail to apply them to my face. If I could have a complete MAC provided makeover, where I was able to keep all of the product they use, I wouldn't be able to sign quickly enough.

My makeup bag consisted of E.L.F. and Cover Girl, both from blog events...

From the time I first started wearing makeup to last June, I was a drugstore makeup junkie. I mostly bought Maybelline products. However I started selling Avon for a while, and even though I no longer sell it, I have to say I'm hooked on the brand. It's great quality for a low price, which really can't be beat. I think I blew all of my profits on buying makeup... I have an insane amount now, lol.

I am the same when it comes to make-up. I wore Mac from ages 25-38 then decided that the foundation was not working well with my older skin. So I tried Bare Essentials for about a year but it was drying. I landed on Nars which I have been wearing the last year - but I wear exactly what they told me to wear because I am clueless if I wanted to deviate. For all those years I wore a MAC lipstick called hyper that was a perfect color for me but also a perfect texture. Then they discontinued it and I have been on the search for a good lipstick EVER since! I think I found one 2 weeks ago, interestingly enough from NARS also. I swear lipstick and purses are the 2 things women spend there life searching for the perfect one! Whew - felt good to let that out ;-) I admire those women who master make-up!

Make an appt at MAC and they'll do your whole face. You'll need to commit to buy $50 in product but thatll be easy. I did it a few weeks ago and learned about fake eyelashes. Never thought I'd use those but now I love em! You'll enjoy it.
