How To Get A Kid To Clean His Room

I have a little obsession with reality TV. I admit that. Perhaps they were having a Hoarders mini marathon on, Sunday night.  I LOVE watching that show.  I think it is appeasing to my inner OCD, and justifies my obsession with throwing things away. I know that my friend, Kim, will understand my need to throw things away.  It is very hard to live in my house sometimes, especially with all of the little toys lying around.

Hoarders

After the first episode, Angry Kid came and sat down with me. He wanted to see what I was watching.  I told him the title, Hoarders.  He did not understand, but he say it with his own eyes…that was enough.  It was really sad though when they started showing children’s rooms.

I explained to Angry Kid that these people keep a lot of stuff, and don’t clean up. I told him that never put things in the trash, give them to charity, or put things away.  Angry Kid instantly looked at the floor in the living room.  I saw that there were Legos, and other small toys all over.  He immediately started picking up his toys and placing them in boxes nearby.

Angry Kid then said, “I don’t want bugs in my room.”  One of the children on the show had bugs in his bed.  I think that completely freaked Angry Kid out. So every time his mess gets a little out of hand, I might have to remind him about watching Hoarders.

Angry Kid's "Hoarding" Mess

This is what the living room/family room table looked like after he picked up his mess.  I’m pretty impressed.  He did it all by himself.

P.S. I’m pretty excited. There’s a Hoarder’s Marathon on Memorial Day.  I’m working that day, but totally setting the DVR.

Doood... this show freaks me the hell out! I've started seeing some patterns in my mom's hoarding and back to my grandma, and even some memories of my great-grandma. The reason I was looking back was because in one of the episodes, they talked about that it might be hereditary. Not that you pick up the habit, but that you might have the propensity to have this disorder. I have been tossing crap like crazy!!

I have GOT to watch that show. I need to DVR it Sunday! My 5-year-old is a master pack rat. She saves everything and I mean everything. It's time for an intervention. Mwaa haa haa haa

Love, love, love Hoarders! I just can't watch too much of it or it freaks me out and sends me off into a maniacal cleaning spree!

My husbands aunt is a real life hoarder. I have never been there personally but everyone else in the family has and they tell me about it. They have groups of people go in to clean every once in a while but she just sits there and lets them do it and then it doesn't fix the problem. It's sad what conditions she lives in and what she is teaching her daughter to live like too.

Oh, my OCD kids would never ever fall into that trap. I can't even get them out the door for having to wait til the last action figure is displayed perfectly, the last puzzle piece is in, or the last Lego positioned. LOL (Love the website name btw) Jaelyn: : http://ow.ly/1PnXE

it can be hard to make grown-up concepts sound not totally crazy to kids.

totally watched the bed bug episode. and now im going to make my own AK watch it! lol. maybe it will help... and because my grandpa (and dad) are hoarders to a lesser extent than those on TV (they are clean and throw trash away- but keep "stuff") I religiously purge stuff. I used to keep it all- just like them. and one day I got sick of it. now it all goes. out the door. somewhere else.

I LOVE Hoarders. That's one of my fave shows! My kids have seen it once or twice and they both get so grossed out by it. They get their OCD tendencies from their mama :)
