I have always been a fan of intricate designs and stenciling in home decorating. But I have neither the talent, the time, or the money to hire someone to do a mural on my walls. My friend, Ruth, had an awesome mural done on her son’s room before he was born. It is now her daughter’s room. She went with a “Winnie the Pooh” theme which is great for a little boy or girl. Can you believe that it is all paint on those walls. It’s amazing, and I’m sure it took a ton of time to create.
I’m one of those people who is constantly changing my mind about the decor in my home. Angry Husband always knows when I’m “up to something”. I get that look when I’m walking around the house. I stop and focus on something, then I head to my computer. I usually end up looking for a certain piece of furniture, artwork, or paint.
I have recently discovered decorating with vinyl, and I’m in love. I can put up a design made with vinyl on my walls, and I know that it is not permanent. They are also relatively inexpensive. There are now companies that sell these vinyl designs, along with small independent shops like the ones on Etsy. I’ve bought all of my vinyl on Etsy which is a fabulous place and it’s supporting small businesses.
“Welcome” on our front door from Decal Monograms
You can barely see it, but there is a Etched Glass Vinyl Monogram from Decal Monograms on this towel holder.
With a big circle of light from my flash, here is my Macbook. The “Julie” is from Decal Monograms and the birdie is from Urban Expressions. The birdie is actually a test vinyl decal sent from the seller when I purchased the design below.
This is another preview of Angry Kid’s bedroom. Yep, we used the word “kill” on an almost five year old’s room. The decal is from Urban Expressions.
Have you used vinyl in decorating your home? How have you used it? Do you like using vinyl? Do you have any tips or great ideas? Please share with us!

Hi Julie!
My sister had an Uppercase Living Party about a month ago, and I went HOG WILD!! I bought quite a few and put them on simple artists canvases that I bought fairly cheap at the local Hobby Lobby. I just used regular acrylic paint and let them dry then put the phrases on. That’s what I’m giving out for Christmas this year! LOVE IT!!
The mural you posted was beautiful, and I LOVE how you used your vinyl decals! Very cute!!
Thanks for sharing!!
I have some vinyl decals in my daughter’s room and I love them. She has a surfer girl room and we were able to get some great surfboard and hibiscus flowers in vinyl to put up in her room. It was so easy to do, I plan on adding more vinyl touchs around the rest of our house house.
great idea! i’m still gathering courage to peel off the unsightly wallpaper from my entry room. one must destruct before construct. me, i’m just stuck.
Oh my son’s room was the worst with wallpaper. It took us an entire week when we moved in to remove it. It was these awful 1980′s circus animals with two different borders.
Love the welcome on the front door. So many cute vinyl decals out there right now.
BT rooms is just precious!
love it! I have a cricut die cutting machine for scrap booking- but it can cut vinyl too! I did a lot of stuff for my cousin’s kids- each of their names, flowers for her, and surfboards and palm trees for him. I haven’t done anything in my own home yet since I’m still (we have lived here a year) trying to decide what colors to paint my primered walls…
LOL, I totally understand about the paint and the walls. I want to re-paint every room in our house and then put some cool vinyl etc. in there. We are starting with our son’s room. It’s turning out fantastic.
I had an Uppercase Living party at my house, and I love my vinyl decor! I have a design by my front door that says, “This Home Established 2009.” Above our bed, we have “L’amour e Bello” which means Love is Beautiful in Italian. And then I ordered a monogrammed “K” in etched glass and put it on a large glass jar and use it as a punch bowl.
I am planning on ordered a frame design in etched glass and putting it on my bathroom mirrors to make them a little more fun. I also really love the vinyl growth charts.
Btw, being a former MotoX promoter, I love the decal in your son’s room!
I’m quite addicted to vinyl now. I keep thinking of all the projects that I can do with it.
I love the decal in my son’s room too. We are going with an extreme sports theme.
Is the vinyl easy to apply? How is it at stay put too? I’ve been wanting to get some pieces for our bedroom but haven’t yet because I wasn’t sure how it would work. How long have you had the one on your door?
It’s completely easy to apply. The one on our front door has been there for over a year. I actually need to re-order one cause they painted ours houses recently and I had to remove it.
I recently put some up in my daughter’s bedroom and hallway. My daughter’s room just has white polka dots. But I LOVE what I did in the hallway! I ordered some photos-turned-canvases from The Canvas People and then got a “sister” quote that I fell in love with. Actually, I have a post about it. Check it out!

I really want to get some to put up but I haven’t tried any yet. I think I would lie to get some for our front door!
I have a couple in my house. I love that they are an inexpensive and easy way to spruce up a room for us non-professional decorators.
I cannot wait to see A.T’s room complete
The Urban Expression vinyls are killer! I added it to my faves, so thanks for sharing!
That bedroom is amazing! I would love to sleep in there! Love all your ideas. Not such a commitment (or expense).
